The four-day XiamenIndustry Expo concluded at the Xiamen International Conference and ExhibitionCenter on April 15.
This year marks theend of the national five-year plan which came in to effect from 2011 to 2015.Fujian is at the center of the economic belt which lies along the route ofChina's the Belt and Road initiative. The expo has sought for a transformation and more innovation under theleadership of the Ministry of Commerce, the State Council's Taiwan AffairsOffice, the Ministry of Science and Technology, and the General Administrationof Quality Supervision. The expo, which has displayed advanced technology andshared high-end achievements, has helped promote cross-Straits cooperation in themechanical and electrical industries and has evolved into an influentialindustrial event.
I. The expo respondsto national strategy and takes on siphon effect A new round of technological and industrial changes is being prepared atpresent, as global technology innovation becomes increasingly active. The UShas fully implemented its "re-industrialization" strategy and"Industry 4.0" is on the rise in Europe. The proposal "Made inChina 2025", set forth by the Chinese government, paves the way for the developmentof the Chinese manufacturing industry in the next decade. Under the program,the expo's organizing committee changed the name of the 18-year-old China XiamenMachinery and Electronics Exhibition (CXMEE) to the 2015 Xiamen Industry Expothis year. The expo has broadened its predecessor's function, tapped into theInternet development and closely followed industrial development trends acrossthe Taiwan Straits. It will transform itself into an international, professionaland market-oriented event to help realize trade and investment cooperation andindustrial upgrading across the Straits.
The expo expanded specialized sectors and focused on trade this year. Itbrought professional exhibitors and buyers together and gathered industrialmanufacturing equipment, hi-tech achievements and market information to exhibita new image. The expo showcased a wide range of distinctive and professionalindustrial sectors. Some of the things showcased included machine tools,automated and industrial robots, tool and moulds, rubber and plastics,engineering machinery, commercial vehicles, surface treatment technology,printing advertisement, packaging and logistics. The expo also highlighted newproducts, technologies and achievements in industrial sectors. Many famous domesticand international manufacturers displayed their latest products and technicalachievements. Exhibitors and visitors interacted with each other and sharedintelligent achievements. Lastly, the event also featured the release of newindustrial products, trends and processes and expanded the new market. Duringthe event, professional associations - including the China Surface EngineeringAssociation's electroplating branch - shared new industrial development trendsand many exhibitors in the robot industry unveiled cutting-edge scientific andtechnological achievements. Participants discussed industrial machinery exportsto Europe and the US to help raise China's international competitiveness. Anumber of exhibitors landed big sales orders and made new partners, helpingthem broaden their business opportunities.
The expo carried forward its predecessor’s heritage and came at a time whenFujian’s free trade zone had officially gone into operation. It offered newdevelopment opportunities to businesses across the Straits. The expo will gatherhigh-end industries and upgrade industrial development in peripheral areas ofXiamen. Longyan city attended the expo as a sponsor for the first time and hadits own pavilion where a total of 34 machinery and optoelectronics enterprises weredisplayed. The display area stood at more than 1,600 square meters andshowcased local electromechanical industry development and the investmentenvironment. Li Shuihua, Party secretary of Guangdong’s Chaozhou city, and LuChunjie, mayor of Chaozhou, led a delegation of more than 150 people to theexpo. The delegation engaged in trade and investment promotion, businessnegotiation and matchmaking activities to broaden regional coordination anddevelopment. Cities in the west of the Taiwan Straits, including Ningde,Sanming, Nanping and Shantou, also joined the expo to explore businessopportunities and attract investment. In addition, the provinces of Jilin,Shandong, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Guizhou, Dalian and Shenzhen also made theirpresence felt at the expo. A large number of participants spoke volumes aboutthe expo’s role in boosting local industrial development.
II. Active high-end merchants and sparkling intelligent industry This year’s event caught the attention of celebrities from all walks oflife, including Chen Deming, chairman of the Association for Relations acrossthe Taiwan Straits; Yao Jingyuan, contract researcher for the Counselors Officeof the State Council; Zhang Jing’an, former secretary-general of the Ministryof Science and Technology; Wang Liaoping, chairman of the Association ofEconomy and Trade Across Taiwan Straits; Zhang Yujing, chairman of ChinaChamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Machinery and Electronic Products;Li Rongmin, director of Taipei Office; Deng Zichao, deputy secretary general ofAssociation for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits; and Gao Zongyin, presidentof Chinese Industrial Cooperative. Distinguished guests from Taiwan included theStraits Exchange Foundation (SEF) chairman, Lin Join-sane, and a large numberof entrepreneurs.
The expo covered an area of 85,000 square meters and housed 4,000 booths.International engineering machinery, commercial vehicle and consumerelectronics exhibitions were held in the interim. The exhibitions have threemajor features:
1. The expo attracted hundreds of famous manufacturers. The machinery sectorcovered an area of more than 30,000 square meters. The US-based Haas, Hardingeand Hurco, as well as Japan-based Sodick and Takisawa, all joined the sector.Hilectro and LK Group brought their latest energy-conservation equipment to therubber and plastic sector of the expo. South Korea-based LS Machinery - a worldtop manufacturer of injection molding machines - brought its products to theexpo for the first time. Leading robot companies, including Switzerland-basedABB, Germany-based KUKA, Japan-based Fanuc and Yaskawa, also attended the expo.Surface treatment leader Fischer and Atotech were present, along with morethan 60 Chinese counterparts. More than 200 Taiwan or Taiwan-funded enterprisesjoined in the expo, including Hartfordand LITZ.
2. The expo focused on manufacturing industry development and followed the "InternetPlus" development trend. It gathered cutting-edge products and offeredexhibitors an opportunity to display their high-tech strength. Industrial roboticswas a highlight at the expo and proved to be very popular with visitors. Therobotics sector demonstrated the innovation and integration between robots,humans and the industry. Some robots were used to raise production efficiencyand showed their movements with pin-point accuracy. The robots on display wereable to accomplish transportation, packaging and polishing tasks and pull offsuch stunts as the lion dance, chess playing, writing and welding. The robotexhibition aimed to bring science and information close to people and allow thepublic to enjoy the benefits of intelligent science.
3. The expo’s engineering machinery sector brought commercial vehicles tothe expo. Longyan and Sanming, Fujian’s two major commercial vehicle productioncities, arranged for more than 10 commercial and special vehicle companies tojoin the expo. Heavy truck, dumper, communication emergency vehicle, concretemixer and new energy vehicles gathered at the event. In addition, Xiamen XGMAMachinery expanded its presence at the expo and showcased its latest loader,excavator, pavement construction machinery, forklift and pumper in an area of2,000 square meters. The company’s shield tunneling machine (custom-made forXiamen subway construction), an unmanned loader that can be controlled in minesand an excavator that uses clean energy attracted much attention. The charmingnew technology and products at the event greatly increased the expo’s brandinfluence and helped boost industrial exchange and integration.
III. Build a high-end dialogue facility across the Straits A total of 14 forums and seminars were held during the expo. They covered areasof economy and trade, intelligent industry, new media, new culture and newelectromechanical technology. A total of 169 distinguished guests made speechesto nearly 5,000 traders, exhibitors and professionals from scientificinstitutes and business circles. Forums placed focus on industrialtransformation requirements and dealt with challenges in international economicglobalization and multi-polarization development. They received a very goodresponse from the audience.
1. The Cross-Straits Economic and Trade Forum has played an important rolein strengthening negotiations, realizing business development consensus andbuilding effective mechanism across the Straits after years of development. Itfocused on cooperation opportunities provided by the free trade zones and themed“facilitating trade and investment across the Straits”. Many guests deliveredspeeches, including Chen Deming, president of the mainland-based Associationfor Relations across the Taiwan Straits; Lin Join-sane, chairman of theTaiwan-based Straits Exchange Foundation; and Pei Jinjia, mayor of Xiamen. Participantscarried out an in-depth discussion of trade and investment facilitation acrossthe Straits and offered suggestions on free trade zone and economic and tradedevelopment. The Xiamen quality and technical supervision bureau launched thefirst cross-Straits voluntary product certification cooperation program, whichbroadened the way for China's photovoltaic industry to go international.
2. The expo kept close tabs on hot issues and trends in current industrialdevelopment. It joined hands with the Chinese Industrial Cooperatives and heldthe Cross-Straits industrial cooperation and development forum, which focusedon industry upgrading and enterprise transformation. The forum invited severalheavyweights, including Zhang Jing’an, former secretary-general of the Ministryof Science and Technology, and Xu Zhengzhong, a professor from the ChinaNational School of Administration. It gathered personnel from industrialmanufacturing and electronic information sectors. Participants discussedcross-Straits high-tech industry and service policy cooperation, as well asstrategic opportunities in "Industry 4.0" transformation. Theyexplored future industry information development. In addition, otherspecialized forums were held during the expo, including The 8th Cross-StraitsFPD Industry Cooperation Forum, the 2015 Cross-Straits E-Commerce Summit andthe 2015 Cross-Straits Commercial Forum. They all helped to boost in-depthexchanges across the Straits and point the way for future industrialdevelopment.
3. The 2015 Cross-Straits Automation Intelligence Megatrends Forum broughttogether top experts and businessmen in the field. They jointly analyzedtechnical integration in the automation industry, discussed prospects ofautomation and industrial robot development, and negotiated businessopportunities in in-depth cross-Straits cooperation. Their viewpoints attractedmany industrial players and traders and sparked hot discussions at the forum.
In the meantime, the FANUC Products & Technology Exchange Seminar and 2015MADCon search sharing conference were also held. Industrial insiders had anextensive exchange of opinions on the formulation and promotion of industrialand technical standards across the Straits. New technology, products and ideas werehighlighted, drawing in many industrial personnel. They also effectively helpedto boost new technology and product trade across the Straits.
IV. Active and effective event The expo strived to use its industrial influence to broaden the marketchannels for enterprises and build bridges for business and trade cooperation. Ithas produced significant economic benefits and witnessed strong cooperationintention among participants. It has received positive response from thebusiness circle and most of the participants left satisfied.
1. The expo has shown an important role in boosting negotiation and trade.It not only strengthened the exhibition but also focused on trade. The eventcreated a good environment for professional audiences to carry out negotiations.Tens of thousands of merchants entered the expo to seek cooperation andbusiness opportunities. Most of them found satisfactory partners, and manylanded sales orders or reached cooperation agreements. Industrial robot makerVibot (Quanzhou) landed orders worth more than 100 million yuan; Fujian MingxinRobot Co's ‘OTC, Nachi’ products were sold on the spot, involving more than 2million yuan; the company reached trade agreement worth 10 million yuan. Inaddition, Taiwan Takisawa Co concluded 5 million yuan in deals at the expo.Other companies also walked away with fruitful results.
2. The expo's organizing committee arranged a series of investment andtrade matchmaking activities based on hot industrial issues and market demand.These activities produced positive results. First, the Cross-Straits InvestmentTrade & Longyan City Industry Development Projects Matchmaking Symposiumwas held. It was jointly sponsored by the expo's organizing committee, theTaiwan Electrical and Electronic Manufacturers' Association, and the Longyangovernment. More than 20 purchasing enterprises from Taiwan visited Xiamen thisyear for businesses covering mechanical equipment, key components, mould,electronic products and parts, instrument and industrial control equipment. FujianLongma Environmental Sanitation Equipment Co signed a deal with ShunfuElectronics Industrial Co at the symposium, while Dahom Illumination Technologysigned a deal with Gumptious Technology. The two deals involved 30 millionyuan. Yaotai Electronics reached cooperation agreement with the Longyangovernment. Second, the Cross-Straits Agricultural Matchmaking Symposiumattracted famous companies from Taiwan, Brazil and Israel. The event offeredone-on-one negotiation and produced positive results. Taiwan Qiaoxin Metal Materialssigned a $5-million deal with Ningde's Xiapu county. Xiamen Huaguan signed a12-million-yuan yeast production line deal with Zhangzhou's Pinghe county. Third,a total of 29 projects were signed at the Promotion Seminar for Trade &Investment Climates of Chaozhou, Guangdong, involving 13.24 billion yuan. Thoseprojects covered transportation, port, bathroom accessory and tourism. Ameeting to introduce high-end equipment manufacturing park in Fujian's Changtaicounty witnessed conclusion of 17 projects that involved 4.56 billion yuan ininvestment. Fourth, premium project roadshow was held. The show focused onmobile internet application in industry and 10 quality electronic and machineryprojects. It attracted heads of more than 10 investment institutes, including SCGC,SAIF Partners and Kingdom Capital. Investment contracts worth 50 million yuanwere signed.
V. Fully upgraded professional meeting The expo has actively sought for reform to transform itself into aprofessional event. It has cut costs and tried to bring in cutting-edgetechnology to upgrade its quality.
1. The expo paid attention to innovation in attracting investment andattracted increasing professional participants. It strengthened cooperationwith specialized business associations, held promotional activities, broadenedinvitation channel, and conducted innovation in invitation. According to theorganizing committee’s statistics, the expo attracted 39,882 professionalparticipants from 33 countries and regions. There were 5,012 foreignparticipants, mostly from the US, Britain, Australia, Canada, Spain, Japan,Southeast Asia, the Middle East, India, Indonesia, Kenya and Brazil. Domesticparticipants were mostly from Beijing, Shanghai, Guangdong, Shenzhen, Jilin,Changchun, Dalian, Dezhou, Chaozhou, Shantou, Wenzhou, Longyan, Quanzhou,Ningde, Sanming and Nanping. The number of Taiwan participants reached 2,332.The expo also attracted dozens of industry and commerce institutes, includingthe Straits Exchange Foundation, the Cross-Straits Common Market Foundation andthe Taiwan Electrical and Electronic Manufacturers' Association. It has becomethe most prestigious and influential industrial expo across the Straits.
2. The expo insisted on cutting costs in exhibition, reception and work. Itsimplified public exhibition and major activity arrangement and cut non-relatedactivities. Car use, board and accommodation were all strictly brought undercontrol. Exhibitions, meetings and forums all underwent innovation to offerparticipants an effective exchange and cooperation platform.
3. The expo tapped into the “Internet Plus” trend, made full use ofInternet and big data, and focused on innovation. It applied customer relationshipmanagement (CRM) system for the first time and comprehensively upgraded customerinformation maintenance and management capacity. Guest invitation methods wereinnovated to attract professional participants and enable one-on-one directcommunications. The CRM and access control systems were integrated to enhanceinformation management. The expo developed public WeChat account and microwebsite to satisfy participants’ need for information. Participants couldregister through the WeChat account that was linked to CRM system. The brandnew information application offered better services to exhibitors and audience.
This year’s expo continued to get wide media attention. More than 400reporters from 100 media organizations covered the event, including Xinhua NewsAgency, CCTV, China National Radio, China Daily, Guangming Daily, EconomicDaily, China News Agency, Hong Kong Commercial Daily, Hong Kong Wenwei, Ta KungPao and Taiwan China Times. According to incomplete statistics, more than 8,000news reports of the expo were released as of 12:00 April 15. New media helpedthe expo increase its publicity and influence.
